October 25, 2014 Making Strides in Kansas City, MO
I have walked in the Making Strides walks for the last 6 years. In 2012, I spoke at the walk after I had just been re-staged to 4 with mets in my bones and spine. I spoke in front of 15,000 people, and cried in front of 15,000 people. It was such an amazing experience and I hope to continue to help with positivity! I love to meet people and be a part of something that means something to so many. It’s about SO MUCH MORE than money. It’s about doing something for your community, and at the same time making some amazing memories with the people who you care about. This year I walked in honor of my dear friend Latina who we lost to this fight earlier this year.
It was a foggy morning, on the drive to Liberty Memorial. We couldn’t see stop lights, the fog was so thick. The boys were having fun pretending it was haunted outside, Halloween is almost here! That is another cool thing about this walk, people like to dress up for Halloween as well as wearing pink! But it was a gorgeous morning after the fog disappeared, about 65 degrees.
My son Parker is 9 years old. He absolutely loves going to the walk every year, and dancing to the music they blast to get us all pumped up for the walk! Some of the kids at school make fun of him for proudly wearing pink, and it honestly doesn’t bother him, because he knows it’s for his mom. He is such a sweet boy and I am so proud of him. One thing my fight has taught him is to rise above. And he has done just that time and time again. I love that he loves to do the walk each year, we have made so many amazing memories and had great chats on our walk each year.
After the walk, we went over to the Brookside Farmer’s Market and got some carrots, celery, kale, bok choy, Italian parsley, dill, honey, and peppers! We also stopped at STUFF- a store stuffed with wonderful stuff. They have some amazing ‘stuff’ from artists all over the country. My boys loved the GBG’s (Gnome be Gones)! My dad has always wanted a store like that, and we’ve talked about opening one quite a bit lately. Anyway, it was an awesome day!
